Wie ein Technomagazin aus den 90er Jahren die deutsche Rave-Kultur beeinflusste.

Muss lesen

Frontpage magazine started as a fanzine for Frankfurt’s Dorian Gray discotheque, delving deep into Germany’s ’90s rave scene with a focus on techno music. The magazine chronicled the evolution of EDM and house music for nearly a decade, setting itself apart from other publications with its dedication, wit, and flair. Frontpage became an influential voice on German rave culture in the ’90s, viewing techno as a way of life.

Initially funded by Technoclub’s founder Alex Azary, Frontpage expanded its scope beyond music trends to cover the techno subculture in depth. As funding dwindled, founders Jürgen Laarmann and Stefan Weil saw an opportunity to move the magazine from Frankfurt to Berlin, embracing the city’s emerging techno scene. Frontpage captured the essence of the ‘German Summer of Love’ in the ’90s, staying at the forefront of the redefining techno culture.

The magazine’s team, dedicated to the techno mantra, published stories on emerging sub-genres, interviewed iconic artists, and highlighted current releases and trends. With columns like ‘Shopping on Speed’ and ‘Octopussies,’ Frontpage showcased the hedonistic decadence of raves. Art director Alexander Branczyk’s design added to the magazine’s aesthetic, reflecting the ecstasy of rave culture. Despite some criticism of using the platform for self-promotion, Frontpage undeniably shaped German rave culture until its final run in 1997.

As an aside, Culture Trip shared its vision for the future of travel, emphasizing meaningful, responsible connections between travellers. They offer curated small-group trips encompassing Culture Trips, Rail Trips, and Private Trips, catering to solo explorers, couples, and friends seeking immersive experiences. All trips are flightless, fully carbon offset, and designed with care for the planet, aligning with the increasing desire for sustainable travel experiences.
